Professor Ton Tran
Orthopaedic Surgeon
Hips, Knees, Shoulders & Lower Limb
Professor Ton Tran is a highly experienced Australian-trained Orthopaedic Surgeon who has been caring for the community of Melbourne’s south-east for over two decades. Since joining St John of God Berwick Hospital in 2015, he has become known for his expertise, surgical precision, and compassionate approach to patient care.
Prof Tran specialises in the treatment of lower limb and shoulder conditions, including hip and knee joint replacement using cutting-edge computer-navigated and robotic-assisted techniques. He has a particular interest in the direct anterior approach for hip replacement, which allows for a more muscle-sparing surgery and often a quicker recovery for patients. His surgical repertoire also includes the management of shoulder and foot deformities, acute fractures and trauma, lower limb sports injuries, and paediatric orthopaedic conditions.
Beyond his clinical work in Australia, Prof Tran has a strong commitment to global health and humanitarian surgery. He is a long-standing medical partner of the Children First Foundation, providing life-changing surgical care to children from developing countries born with complex limb deformities. His work helps these children achieve improved mobility, function, and quality of life, often after years of living with untreated or undertreated conditions.
Prof Tran previously held a senior public appointment as the Director of Orthopaedic Services at Monash Health, one of Victoria’s largest public health networks. He also serves as an Adjunct-Research Professor at Monash University, contributing to the training of future orthopaedic surgeons and ongoing academic research in musculoskeletal health. His commitment to advancing orthopaedic care extends internationally through his role as the President of the Osteosynthesis and Trauma Care (OTC) Foundation for the South Pacific region, where he supports education, training, and surgical standards in trauma care across the region. He is also a member of Australian Orthopaedic Association, and a Fellow of The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
Fluent in English, French and Vietnamese, Prof Tran is known for his clear communication, collaborative approach, and genuine dedication to improving his patients’ mobility and quality of life—whether they are recovering from a sports injury, managing arthritis, or living with congenital limb conditions.
